ZERO WASTE WITHOUT PACKAGING?
Inspired by Bea Johnson's 'Zero waste home' book, a new shop chain has opened in France. http://www.zerowastehome.com/p/book.html
In Day By Day shops products are sold without consumer packaging. Goods are significantly cheaper, difference can reach 40% according to them.
This is an interesting approach to save our environment. But is it viable?
In the 19. Century grocery stores were operating on a similar way.
Since then food hygiene rules have changed a lot and on todays oversupplied markets, packaging is an important marketing factor too.
In my opinion if we could reduce our packaging waste to the level of the '60-'70-s, even that could bring a miracle.
So we think there is no need to worry in the packaging industry. According to this new chain, they sell even two bits of cinnamon. This I would call waste.
I would rather try to buy in bigger quantities or with collective packaging only, as this way we can save on packaging, time and energy.
We are looking forward to see the development of this chain. Let's see if nostalgy or environment consciousness increases spending power.
